Paranormalcy by Kiersten White

Last week (before Mockingjay), I read Kiersten White's debut novel Paranormalcy, which is a fun read and a new fun and unique voice in the paranormal YA genre.

Evie’s always thought of herself as a normal teenager, even though she works for the International Paranormal Containment Agency, her ex-boyfriend is a faerie, she’s falling for a shape-shifter, and she’s the only person who can see through paranormals’ glamours.

But Evie’s about to realize that she may very well be at the center of a dark faerie prophecy promising destruction to all paranormal creatures.

So much for normal.

For me, Evie was a fun character, especially for the younger YA readers.

Hi Suzie,

I really enjoyed your live chat at WriteOnCon. You were great :)

I'm in a bit of a dilemma. I've been searching for a book similar to mine for months. I haven't found any. It's a YA Fantasy about four modern teenagers who end up stuck in a different world. While they're trying to find their way home, they get mixed up in a battle between "good and evil". The conflict arises when they are forced to side with "evil".

No vampires, no angels, no demons, no fairies, no...mermaids, no...whatnot. The paranormal beings are my own.

I really want to be able to find a similar book so that I can compare them in a query letter (to give an idea of who would buy it). Of course I won't find any with the same paranormal beings, but modern-day teens lost in a different world, trying to make their way back? There have to be some out there, right? (YA, not MG's like Narnia).

Is it impossible to find a publisher who would take such a novel? Would they think it's too risky?
