Stephenie Meyer's New Novella

Publisher's Weekly announced yesterday morning that Stephenie Meyer will be publishing The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner, available June 5th. Bree Tanner is, if you remember (it's okay, I didn't either), a minor character in Eclipse.

So, what do you think? Are you excited? Not so much? Will you buy it, borrow it, or read it online?

Read the PW article here.

oh no the twilight saga is branching out more???? I give her credit for expanding not just on bella & edward but with other characters but I couldn't get through twilight so i was hoping she'd do something completely different.

I had to look up who Bree was, too. It's kind of annoying because I actually do want her to finish Midnight Sun, but she comes out with this instead? I'll probably read it for free when it's available. I have a sneaking suspicion this is more for $$$ gain than anything else.

Nope, I'm not excited. Probably won't read it, even though I have the rest of the Twilight series. I'd rather have the novella be about another character.

I too was hoping she'd do something completely different. But I'm of course, still going to read this one.

She is kinda brilliant for doing this, ya know? But I'd prefer to read Midnight sun instead. *grumble*

LOL- my word verifcation is needme--fits the Bella theme, no?

I have to remember who that was first and then maybe I will get a little excited :)

For those of you who don't remember who Bree was, she was from the scene with the war between the newborns and the Cullens. They took Bree as a prisoner and offered to teach her the ways of the Cullens. The Voltari later killed her.

I'm interested to see how Stephenie will make such a minor character (with such a short 'second life') into a novella.

I'm sad that she decided to finish this before completing Midnight Sun. I really want to read that.

My personal opinion is that if she was going to expand on other characters I would have liked to see her expand on the Jacob/Renesme relationship and how their future ended up. Or perhaps the something with one of the other set of vampires from Breaking Dawn.

I am curious to see what her reasoning behind choosing this character to expand on. There are so many other stronger and more memorable characters to explore.

I will still read it though.

Did anyone else notice that this novella is going to be released June 5th, and the Eclipse movie will be in theaters on June 30? No coincidence I'm sure. I am curious now if the movie will include more about Bree? Hmmm.

I'm really not all that excited about it. I think I have a real hard time reading about a character I know ends up dead.

If she's going to branch out (and I'm not just saying this as a member of Team Jacob) I really wish she'd delve a little more into the lives of the wolf pack. Why not tell a story from Seth's perspective? I adore him, and as of yet, he hasn't died.

I love this idea! I think it will be so fascinating to read the story from a newborn vampire's point of view. That, and I love Stephanie Meyer's storytelling. She makes us drink every word.

I do keep wondering if there will be a sequel to The Host. I loved that book.

I'll read it, maybe not right away but eventually. I think Meyer is a good story teller and she's imaginative as well. Should be an entertaining read. :)

I'm a bit sick of the Twilight saga myself, but I know I'll be buying it just to see what it's like. For me, Twilight is that favorite song you hear way to much and get tired of. I read on yahoo that Stephenie said she wrote this novella while doing edits for Eclipse before Twilight was even published...but I'm a little reluctant to believe that. Either way, I'm curious what everyone else will think of it as well.

Can't say I'm too interested. I'd be more interested in a completely different project from her - outside the Twilight world.

A novella about a character whose fate we already know is about as bad as a prologue revealing - not just teasing - how the MC is murdered at the end of the book. :(

I'm with Kristin. I would have loved to see her at least tackle something that's outside the timeline of the existing books, as both this and Midnight Sun only constitute a perspective shift of existing material. But a new concept or universe would have been even better.

I find Meyer's language in the announcement on her webpage a little odd--"more of a novella than an actual book—my version of a short story." I wonder if this is because she's afraid her audience is unfamiliar with the term novella? It does seem that she's written short stories for anthologies before, so her confusion over the length of one (she was surprised that this was 200 pages, typeset) is just a little head-scratch worthy for me. I wonder how long this is in terms of word-count.

I did stop after Book 2 of Twilight, because I was a little tired of Bella's voice, though I liked a lot of things about Meyer's writing. I keep meaning to pick up The Host, and could see giving this a chance, too.

Out of all the characters she could've picked, I was a little disappointed she chose this one. I had to think long and hard before I remembered who Bree was, and I was really never interested in that character. I'd much rather have read something completely different--or at least about what Alice was doing while she disappeared in Breaking Dawn, or something in Emmett's perspective. BUT--I'm sure I'll read it. And maybe it will be better than I'm expecting.

I'll probably read it eventually, but to be honest I'm not a huge Twilight fan. It seems a little gimmicky to have it coming out right before the movie. But that's probably not Meyer's doing.

I'm excited and yes I will read it. I think I might be in the minority here but I totally remembered who Bree was. Stephenie wrote this before finishing Eclipse to help her iron out some details with the new borns. I think her publisher was just like, give us something already! She says she's not writing vampires right now because she has other projects in mind first. Did anyone read The Host? As much as I loved Twilight, I think that one was better!

I can't deal with Twilight. Read the first 3 to form a fair opinion but the Bella/Edward relationship is so much based on control & is emotionally abusive that I couldn't recommend it to everyone.

I love a good fun book sometimes, but the ideas it offers young girls are not good or fun.

Also I did not remember this character.

I'll read it, and I'll pay for it, because I admire the charity angle. But I'd be more interested if she'd do something with Alice and Jasper. Those two + Carlise have a far more interesting back story than any of the other characters.

I'm taking advantage of the freebie online. Then I'll decide whether or not I need it for my shelf. I'm actually interested in seeing the voice in it. I want to know if it is different than Bella's.

I'll second Kristin Miller's opinion.

Yes - I will read. I love the Twilight saga. They are the books that changed my life. I know how that sounds, but they did.

Ee Leen Lee said...

Quick! There must be more in the vaults!

Dark Angel said...

I was hoping she'd write more about the Cullens. Go into how they all became vampires and what their lives were like before they "changed"...kind of like the Anne Rice novels.

Anyhoo, no I do not intend to read this one nor did I read her last novel, because of the genre.

But the Twilight saga will always have a place on my bookshelf. :-)

Five Random Things About Suzie

1. I drink so much orange soda, it's probably running through my veins. I've been known to go through a twelve pack of diet sunkist in a day.

2. I'm legitimately nocturnal (or a vampire). I will be so exhausted at two pm that I'm falling asleep standing up - it has happened before, at Six Flags no less - but as soon as the sun goes down I'm wide awake.

3. I have a gorgeous unused $6000 Reem Acra wedding dress hanging in my closet, and it showed up on my doorstep the same day my (now ex) fiance broke up with me. And thank God for that. I wouldn't have wanted to waste that dress on him.

4. Social anxiety plagues me daily. I write a script and practice in front of the mirror when I have to make a phone call, but most people who interact with me have no idea how nervous I am (or perhaps they lie) because I've worked so hard to try to overcome it.

5. I'm actually worried that I will never love my children (when I do have them in the far off future) as much as I love my dogs. I just like animals better than people - they're sweet and innocent and soft and furry - is that so wrong?
